CHICAGO — A developer and Ald. John Arena (45th) have come together on a plan to build a drive-thru Starbucks coffee shop at 4151 N. Cicero Ave., along the northern edge of the Six Corners Shopping District, Arena’s staff said Wednesday.

After months of negotiations, the builder agreed to set the cafe directly against the street and to include a front patio large enough to hold a “public art feature” — both items Arena encouraged as a way to make the patio more accessible to pedestrians and …

A Mixed Income Apartment Aims To Give Vets Priority

CHICAGO (CBS) — A mixed income apartment building is looking to give veterans priority when it comes to housing, but some in the Jefferson Park community said the possibility of the new addition could change the feel of the area.

The location of a former food service provider is the proposed site for the apartment building, at Milwaukee Avenue and Northwest Highway. The building will have retail, a storage facility and 100 units.

Work to Begin on Jefferson Park Master Plan

Big news in the effort to revitalize Jefferson Park! The Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) has awarded a contract to Teska Associates to develop a master plan to enhance the area surrounding the Jefferson Park Transit Center.

I first announced the effort to craft a master plan in the fall of 2015, when I secured funding from the RTA to cover 80% – or $125,000 – of the costs of the analysis. The remaining costs for the master plan will be covered using funds from the Jefferson Park Tax Increment Financing …

Northwest Side Mixed-Income Apartments Offer Hope For Disabled Neighbors

Alex Nitkin · DNAinfo Reporter

JEFFERSON PARK — Sandy Kleinhans is out of options.

Last year, a health scare abruptly ended Kleinhans’ 36-year career as a bank teller and publishing assistant. Her doctor urged her long ago to go on disability leave, warning that a full-time job was a serious risk for someone whose condition makes showering and dressing a two-hour process every morning.

Born with a rare joint disorder that severely limits her movement, Kleinhans now spends most of her time …

CHICAGO — A six-classroom annex at Prussing Elementary School, 4650 N. Menard Ave., and a new pre-kindergarten center are among a suite of improvements designed to ease overcrowding at Northwest Side Schools by summer 2018, Ald. John Arena (45th) announced Monday.

The alderman crystallized plans that district officials had teased in December, when they announced they’d dedicate more than $50 million toward area school improvements and additions in 2017.

Of that sum, about $4.3 million will pay for …
