Red Light Cameras Activated

Red Light Cameras Activated

As of Friday, September 29, the red light cameras at Milwaukee & Central and Foster & Northwest Highway are activated as mandated by the Chicago Department of Transportation. The city will not begin to issue tickets until two weeks after the activation, allowing motorists time to adjust to the changes.

I have always been a strong voice for reforming the red light camera program, and that pressure has helped move CDOT to a more transparent and data driven process of placement of red light cameras. When accidents are reduced cameras are removed. The reduction in side impact crashes was what lead to the removal of the camera at at Foster and Elston in 2014.

The red light camera system has a troubled past, and I will continue to monitor CDOT and it’s rational for placement of this traffic control tool. You can learn more about the criteria for locating red light cameras on the City of Chicago’s website and in the comprehensive red light camera enforcementĀ report conducted by Northwestern University Transportation Center.
